TROBAUGH'S HAT TRICK LIFTS LIONS OVER SAINTS
Oct. 10, 2011
BOSTON, Mass. - A tip of the hat was needed Monday afternoon as Carmen Trobaugh netted three goals for the hat trick and a Lion win as Emerson topped Emmanuel, 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rivalry played at Rotch Field. The win boosted the Lions to 6-6-1 on the year and 4-4-1 in conference play, while Emmanuel dropped to 8-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the GNAC.
The first half belonged to Carmen Trobaugh and the Lions, as they took on the heat with minimal subs to spare and took it to the scoreboard first. Meghan Foehl played a ball across the box in the eighth minute, which Trobaugh received on a deflection that she blasted into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0, Emerson.
The Lions went hunting for another in the 26th minute of action with Elizabeth Corti stepping up for the assist. Corti dropped a lighting quick pass to the top right of the box to Trobaugh, who posted up against a defender before finding space for a turnaround shot that landed untouched in the top left of the net.
The Lions and Trobaugh stuck one more before the half expired. A Saints' foul lined up a direct kick just outside the box in the 35th minute, which Amber Bigwood perfectly placed to the far post where Trobaugh awaited to one touch it into the corner and finish off her banner day.
The Saints fought back and took one from the Lions in the second half. Freshman Amanda Roberts broke through in the 72nd minute of action with Donandrea Myette completing a pass across the top of the box that Roberts reeled back and cracked into the top right of the net to foil the shutout campaign and pull it to the 3-1 final score.
Emerson keeper Marissa MacDonald picked up the win for the Lions and collected three saves in the outing. Emmanuel's Jessica D'Ottavio suffered the loss, giving up the three first-half goals. Classmate Jackie Murray relieved D'Ottavio in the second frame. The duo combined for 5 saves on the day.
The Saints are on a two-game GNAC slide, but will look to recover on Wednesday night, when they host perennial powerhouse Wheaton College in a non-conference battle. The Lions kick back into gear this Thursday as they travel to UMASS Boston to face the Beacons in a non-conference match-up at 3:30 p.m. in South Boston.
