BOSTON – A four-goal second half for Emmanuel Saints women's soccer, including three scores over a 10 minute span, helped them return to the win column with a 5-1 result over the Elms Blazers in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night at Clemente Field.
The Saints opened the scoring in the 10th minute with sophomore Sarah Dullaghan (Belmont, Mass.) driving down the left wing, cutting toward the middle, and chipping a pass to sophomore Maya Daryanani (Raynham, Mass.) in the box. The weight on the pass was perfect as Daryanani settled at the penalty spot and toe-poked a shot into the right-side netting for a 1-0 lead.
The match remained 1-0 until the two sides traded goals early in the second half. Dullaghan was once again the assister, this time on a goal for junior Rachel Harrington (Lebanon, N.H.). The sophomore forward laid off a pass to Harrington from 15 yards out and her strike found the back of the net to double the Emmanuel lead.
Elms turned up the pressure on the Saints defense, breaking through just 90 seconds later on the sixth goal of the year by sophomore Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.). The Blazers forward found space in the right-side of the Saints penalty area, and after cutting back to her right foot, McDonough chipped a shot over Saints sophomore goalie Gaby Baker (Grafton, Mass.), pulling Elms back to a one-goal deficit.
The Blazers continued to apply pressure on the Saints, producing numerous opportunities to tie the game, but Baker stood strong to keep the 2-1 edge.
Daryanani started an Emmanuel three-goal-in-10-minute stretch with her second of the game in the 69th minute. Coming off a Saints corner kick, a shot by first-year Ciara Horan (Braintree, Mass.) was initially stopped, but the rebound fell for Daryanani, who rolled a shot from close range into the net for a 3-1 lead.
Horan added her name to the goal-scoring column in the 71st minute, winning a race to a loose ball in the box, scoring past an onrushing Elms goalie in senior Angela Picheo (Woodridge, N.J.). Dullaghan would finish the scoring with her team-leading ninth of the season in the 79th minute for the 5-1 win.
Daryanani's two-goal night is the first multi-goal game of her collegiate career while Dullaghan's two assists are the first multi-assist game in her collegiate career. Baker finished with five saves, moving to 10-2 (8-1 GNAC) this season.
The Saints (11-2-0, 9-1-0 GNAC) head back on the road for an Oct. 14 match at Colby-Sawyer at 12:00 p.m. The Blazers (6-7-0, 5-6-0 GNAC) welcome Regis College for a GNAC match on Saturday as Elms will celebrate Senior Day prior to the 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
Emmanuel will then make a quick turnaround to face Norwich on Oct. 15 at 2:00 p.m. on Clemente Field, resuming a game from earlier this season. The Saints lead that game 2-0 with approximately 16 minutes remaining in the first half.
