STANDISH, Maine – Emmanuel College (10-1-0, 8-0-0 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-6-2, 3-4-2 GNAC), 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The conference contest stood at a scoreless stalemate until the 35th minute when Emmanuel sophomore Sarah Dullaghan (Belmont, Mass.) netted an unassisted tally. Settling a loose ball near the top of the penalty area, Dullaghan fired a left-footed shot to the near side post, beating the SJC keeper for a 1-0 lead. The Monks tied the game four minutes later when senior Darcy Wright (Salem, N.H.) scored her first goal of the season on a PK attempt.
The SJC lead lasted less than three minutes, as senior Sophie Patterson (Scituate, Mass.) lifted the Saints to a 2-1 edge. First-year Kayla Francillon (Medford, Mass.) raced in behind the Monks defense on the left wing, cut back toward the middle, and found a streaking Patterson at the top of the penalty area. After settling the pass, Patterson fired a shot into the bottom right corner for the lead.
Emmanuel sophomore Annebel Balogh de Galantha (Grafton, Mass.) closed out the game scoring with her third goal of the season at the 71:46 mark. Following an SJC foul, the sophomore defender lined up a free kick from 28 yards out. Her shot drove over the three-person wall and tucked in just under the crossbar, adding an insurance tally for Emmanuel.
TEAM STATS:
Emmanuel held the advantage in shots (18-5), shots on goal (12-2), and corner kicks (10-2) on the evening.
