BOSTON – A first half goal was all it took for Emmanuel College (6-0-0 GNAC) to take down Lasell University (4-2-1 GNAC) 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Clemente Field in GNAC play. The win, which is the team's 7th straight, pushed the Saints into first place in the GNAC.
The Saints and Lasers were battling up and down the pitch before a ball from Alexandra Gencarelli (Bradford, R.I.) found Ciara Horan (Braintree, Mass.) on the right side of Emmanuel's offensive third. Horan broke free towards the endline and fired a ball across the face of goal. The shot snuck inside the near post and shook the back of the net putting the Saints in the lead through 20 minutes. It was Horan's third goal of her first-year campaign with Emmanuel.
Throughout the remainder of the half the Lasers pushed to find an equalizer. Shots from Bobbi O'Guin (Newton, MA), Camdyn Lamarre (Belgrade, Maine), and Evenlyn DiFiore (Las Vegas, Nev.) were all blocked by a Saints defense that refused to break. Lasell added two more shots in the second half but were outshot by the Saints 9-6 over the 90 minutes.
The shutout marked Emmanuel's 6th of the season and 5th in GNAC play. The Saints have only allowed two goals in their eight matches so far this season thanks in large part to the strong central defensive partnership between Catherine Manning (Peabody, Mass.) and Annebel Balogh de Galantha (Grafton, Mass.). Goalkeeper Gaby Baker (Grafton, Mass.), who finished tonight's match with three saves, is now tied for second in the GNAC for save percentage (.882) and goals against (2) while being tied for the league's lead in goals-against average (0.29).
The Lasers will return home this Saturday (9/30) for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff against GNAC opponent Mitchell College. The Saints will see a visiting New England College this Saturday (9/30) at noon as Emmanuel College hosts its annual Family Weekend.
