BOSTON – Needing just one chance to strike in the second half, Eagles sophomore Addi Laslie (Ellsworth, Maine) took advantage of a ball over the back line of the Saints defense, scoring in the 64th minute for the game's only goal, giving Husson a 1-0 victory over the Emmanuel Saints on Friday evening in non-conference play.
Husson possessed in their own defensive half before a long ball out of the back from Husson junior Mackenzie Lambert (Bangor, Maine) was sent over the Saints back line. The bouncing ball among the Saints defenders gave Laslie the opportunity to run onto the pass and break in on goal alone.
After one touch to put the ball in front of her, Laslie fired the bouncing ball in on Emmanuel's goal with a right-footer from 12 yards away. The perfectly-placed shot hit the side netting, resulting in the game's lone goal.
The Saints had a similar opportunity in the first half with a ball coming in from their back line into the Eagles defense. First-year Ciara Horan (Braintree, Mass.) eventually settled the ball and put sophomore Sarah Dullaghan (Belmont, Mass.) in behind the defense with a perfectly weighted pass. Dullaghan, on her left foot, fired from 15 yards out, but sophomore goalie Madison Weigler (Manchester, N.H.) was there to shut the door with a diving save to her left.
The Saints held the majority of possession in the game, finishing with a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Weigler takes credit for the victory after a four-save night, moving to 1-0 on the season while EC sophomore Gaby Baker (Grafton, Mass.), made three saves in her first career collegiate start, but the defeat drops her to 0-1.
The Saints (0-1-0) return to play on Sunday afternoon, making the short trip to Hormel Stadium in Medford, Mass. to take on Fisher at 12:00 p.m. The Eagles (1-0-0) are also back in action on Sunday, welcoming Marian University for a noon kickoff in Husson's home opener.
