THE LEAD – The Emmanuel College women's soccer team posted its 13th shutout of the year as first year Maya Daryanani (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted the game-winner to lift the Saints past host Simmons University, 1-0, Wednesday evening in the regular-season finale of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following 56 minutes of scoreless action, the Saints got on the board early in the second half to take the lead for good on Daryanani's third goal of the year. First year midfielder Liz McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) dribbled into a dangerous area in the Sharks penalty box, firing off a near-side rocket that hit the post and deflected right to Daryanani who one-timed the rebound into the back of the net for the 1-0 Emmanuel lead.
- The Saints defensive unit only needed the one score to hold on for the 1-0 shutout win, their program-record 13th clean sheer of the year.
- EC was in control in the first half but the Sharks defensive line held strong to keep things scoreless at the break despite Emmanuel holding a 15-4 advantage in shots and 5-0 lead in corners.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- EC keeper Patricia Kirejczyk (Ansonia, Conn.) picked up the win with four saves to move to 11-0 on the season in net including an 8-0 record in GNAC play. She has not allowed a goal in over 588 minutes of action and enters the GNAC postseason with an impressive 0.18 goals against average to rank fourth in the nation.
- The 13 shutouts on the year rank tied for third among NCAA D-III programs during the 2022 campaign with only Trinity (Texas) and Calvin having more at 15 and 14, respectively.
- The Saints finished the day outshooting Simmons by a 23-8 margin and won the corner kick battle, 9-0.
- The assist for McCormick was her 10th of the year, the second most in the GNAC and good for a tie for seventh in the nation among D-III players. It also ranks tied for sixth all-time for single-season assists at Emmanuel and is the most since Lindsey Garvey '14 dished out 10 helpers in 2012.
- Simmons junior goalie Marita Nothacker (Philadelphia, Pa.) suffered the loss making eight saves, wrapping the year with a GNAC-best 155 stops for the Sharks.
