THE LEAD – For the second time in as many games, the Emmanuel Saints women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon, tying Colby-Sawyer in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
Prior to the start of the match, the Emmanuel Saints women's soccer program recognized seniors Catherine Manning (Peabody, Mass.), Sophia Chirigotis (Merrimac, Mass.), Megan McMillen (North Branford, Conn.), Anna Hajnasr (Plymouth, Mass.), and Aoife Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) for their contributions to the team for Senior Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With chances at both ends spread through the opening 80 minutes of play, the best chances for a game-winner came in the final 10 minutes of Saturday's scoreless bout.
- The best of the Colby-Sawyer chances came in the 80th minute following a Saints turnover that led to a counter-attack by the Chargers. Sophomore Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) would eventually find herself at the top of the penalty area, firing a right-footed shot that was deflected by a Saints defender, forcing an adjustment by first-year goalie Sandra Griffith (Roland, Ark.), who sprawled out for a diving save to the right, keeping the game at 0-0.
- A flurry of free and corner kicks for the Saints in the final minute provided EC with their best chances of the afternoon. A 90th minute free kick from the right wing saw Manning's header on frame blocked for a corner kick. It was the first of three corners in the final 20 seconds for the Saints, with the last of the trio ultimately going out of play as the horn sounded, resulting in the 0-0 draw.
