THE LEAD – First year forward Sarah Dullaghan (Belmont, Mass.) broke a 1-1 tie with her team-leading 11th goal of the year to power visiting Emmanuel College past Anna Maria College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Caparso Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dullaghan netted the game-winner on an effort play where she took advantage of a failed AMCat clear, headed the ball forward to herself before driving a shot towards the goal. The initial blast was deflected but had enough behind it to trickle into the net to give the Saints the 2-1 lead with 16:36 left to play.
- As the time winded down, the AMCats only chance at an equalizer came with 5:03 to play when DeAnna Baker (Lansdale, Pa.) fired one on frame but EC first year keeper Sandra Griffith (Roland, Ark.) was up for the task, preserving the one-goal lead.
- Emmanuel took an early 1-0 lead when junior Rory Mahoney (Quincy, Mass.) tapped in a pass across the goal mouth from Dullaghan just 11:08 into the contest.
- EC owned an 8-3 advantage in the first half in shots as well a 3-1 lead in corners.
- The host AMCats continued to keep the game tight in the second half and broke through in the 64th minute to register the equalizer and even the score at 1-1 when Valentina Villa (Norwalk, Conn.) played a ball that split two EC defenders towards goal. Riley Michaud (Clinton, Mass.) found space between both backs to receive the pass and finish for her team-leading sixth goal of the year to set the stage for a battle to the final whistle.
