THE LEAD – Emmanuel College hung on for a 2-1 road victory Thursday afternoon, topping host Mount Holyoke College in non-conference women's soccer action at the MHC Soccer Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior forward Addie LeGault (Farmington, Conn.) put the Saints on top 1-0 in the 15th minute of play, finishing a cross by first year midfielder Liz McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) to open the scoring.
- The Saints doubled their lead with under two minutes to go in the half. McCormick's pass in the penalty area set up Sarah Dullaghan for a point-blank shot at the goal. Breen staved off the shot, but LeGault was there again for the rebound and the easy putaway.
- EC dominated the first half shot differential, owning a 24-6 advantage with 14 landing on frame, keeping Lyons keeper Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) busy with 11 first-half saves.
- Mount Holyoke made it a one-goal game during the 60th minute as first year midfielder Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) made a cut-back move on the right wing before scoring to the far post to pull the hosts to within a goal at 2-1. The score was her first collegiate goal.
- The Saints almost got the goal right back as Breen was forced to make big saves in the 62nd and 65th minute to keep MHC within striking distance before she was relieved by first year Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) in the 67th minute.
- The Lyons had a great look to tie the game with 13:49 to play following an EC foul that gave the hosts a free-kick from 35 yards out. The kick led to a bouncing ball inside the Saints box and Ada Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany) poked a shot towards the far post that just went wide to keep the score at 2-1.
- LeGault had a chance to put the game away with multiple opportunities over the final few minutes of play but Govea came up with several big saves but the Lyons offense was unable to get the equalizer as the Saints hung on for the 2-1 road win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- EC first year goalkeepers Sandra Griffith (Roland, Ark.) and Patricia Kirejczyk (Ansonia, Conn.) shared time in net as Griffith made four first-half saves to earn her first collegiate victory before Kirejczyk came on to play the second half making two stops.
- After dominating the first-half shot totals, the Saints edged the Lyons in the second half, 7-6, to make the final game total a 31-12 margin.
- Breen finished with a season-high 14 saves while Govea added three saves in relief.
- The Saints close their 2022 non-conference schedule with a record of 4-0-1 and owning a goal differential of 21-2 over the five contests.
