THE LEAD – Emmanuel College posted a 2-0 victory over Elms College on Saturday afternoon at Leary Field in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer opener for both programs. With the win, EC improves to 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2011.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite outshooting the Blazers by an 11-0 margin in the first half, the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime as Emmanuel was unable to get anything by junior keeper Angela Picheo (Wood-Ridge, N.J.).
- It didn't take long for the Saints to break through in the second half as first year Sydney Sears (Jericho, Vt.) played a left footed cross in front of the goal that junior forward Addie LeGault (Farmington, Conn.) put away for her fifth goal of the season, giving EC the 1-0 cushion with 42:41 to play in the match.
- Elms did not have a shot on goal until the 68 minute marker when sophomore Kelly Malheiro (Centereach, N.Y.) tested EC first year goalie Patricia Kirejczyk (Ansonia, Conn.) who was up for the challenge to preserve the one-goal advantage.
- Emmanuel controlled play through the final stretch and added an insurance goal with 6:58 left by first year Sarah Dullaghan (Belmont, Mass.) to account for the 2-0 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Emmanuel finished the contest outshooting the Blazers by a 19-5 margin while also owning a 9-3 edge on corners.
- Kirejczyk improves to 4-0 on the year making two saves in the win and has not allowed a goal through 304+ minutes of action to lead the GNAC with a 0.00 goals against average.
- Picheo suffers the loss despite making seven saves in net for Elms.
- Both LeGault and Dullaghan have found the net in three consecutive games for the Saints marking the first time that two Emmanuel teammates have scored in three straight matches since Amber [DiNucci] Slone '11 and Kate [McKenna] Pelaggi '10 accomplished the feat back in 2008.
