NEW LONDON, N.H.- A pair of first-half goals by Saints sophomore Addie LeGault (Farmington, Conn.) provided just enough offense for Emmanuel as they picked up a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory over Colby-Sawyer, 2-1 on Monday afternoon.
The Saints began with a 1-0 lead when LeGault scored the first goal in the top left corner of the net, 3:24 into the first half, denying junior goalkeeper Alexis Lebreton (Bangor, Maine) any chance of keeping the game a scoreless affair.
The Chargers tried to equalize the 1-0 deficit as first-year Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass) took a shot that was blocked by Emmanuel goalkeeper Lexi Della Rocco (Chester, Conn.) to keep the shutout going.
Things only became harder for the Chargers offense as LeGault scored the second goal of the evening at 35:33 to extend the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Saints.
After an offsides against Emmanuel and a failed corner kick, the Chargers began the second half with a desperate need to respond. And a response it was as O'Connell seized the opportunity at 80:27 taking a shot off of the low center of the goal to cut the deficit to down to one.
The Chargers took one more chance to even the game as sophomore midfielder Kara Keiper (Peterborough, NH) took a shot that went out left from the goalie box, denying the Chargers any chance of an equalizer and giving Emmanuel the 2-1 victory for the afternoon.
The win moves the Saints to 6-7-2 (5-5-0 GNAC) while the loss drops Chargers to 4-8-0 (4-6-0 GNAC.
Emmanuel returns to play with their third game in five days on a Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Johnson & Wales.
