THE LEAD – Three first half goals for the Saints proved vital as Emmanuel returned to their winning ways on Tuesday night thanks to a 3-2 victory over the Anna Maria AMCATS at Clemente Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints scored three times in the first half, starting in the 15th minute on the first goal of the season by senior Bailey Maurer (Florence, Mass.). A loose ball was failed to be covered by the AMCATS goalie as Maurer took advantage of the play, scoring into an open net for a 1-0 lead.
- In the 28th minute, the Saints doubled their lead with sophomore Addie LeGault (Farmington, Conn.) deflecting home a pass from junior Sophia Chirigotis (Merrimac, Mass.) for her team-leading fifth of the season.
- Just shy of the 40th minute, junior Megan McMillen (North Branford, Conn.) added to the Emmanuel advantage with her second of the season, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.
- McMillen's goal would prove to be vital as AMCATS senior Keannah Dunsmore (Georgia, Vt.) scored in the 64th and 66th minute on identical free-kick goals. From 30 yards out, Dunsmore fired shots toward the Saints goal and over the head of the keeper, as Anna Maria pulled to trail 3-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Saints outshot the AMCATS 13-10 as Emmanuel claimed their 10th consecutive win over Anna Maria.
- Saints sophomore goalie Annie Costello (Winchester, Mass.) earned her first career collegiate victory, improving to 1-1 this season while recording three saves on the night.
- AMCATS junior Alice Yokabaskas (Farmingdale, Maine) played the first half, but the loss drops her to 0-2 after making a save on 45 minutes of play.
