THE LEAD – A pair of first half goals for the Bridgewater State Bears provided all the offense they needed as they defeated the Emmanuel Saints 2-0 on Thursday night from Clemente Field in non-conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears were first on the board, scoring early in the first half to take the lead. On a loose, bouncing ball in the close to the Saints goal, Bridgewater State junior Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) pushed her shot past Saints sophomore goalie Lexi Della Rocco (Chester, Conn.), giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
- Bridgewater State doubled their lead in the 39th minute on the first goal of the season for senior Madelyn Morin (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Coming off a corner kick, the Saints appeared to have cleared the ball away, but Morin settled the clearance attempt and fired a right-footed shot from 25 yards away, into the far-side netting, to give the Bears a 2-0 edge.
- Emmanuel had their chances in the second half to breakthrough but Bears senior goalie Tory Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) came up with a pair of saves in the last 45 minutes, preserving the clean sheet and a 2-0 win for Bridgewater State.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
