GUTHRIE MAKES HISTORY AS WOMEN'S SOCCER DOWNS NEWBURY, 7-0

BOSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel College senior forward Mikayla Guthrie (North Andover, Mass.) matched a single-game program record with five goals, as the Emmanuel College Saints defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 7-0 on Wednesday night at Roberto Clemente Field in non-conference action.

Guthrie's five-goal night matches the Saints record for goals in a game, originally set by Vickie Shalian, who accomplished the feat twice in the 1997 season. Furthermore, Guthrie becomes the only other Saints player in program history to record at least four goals in a game, a feat that Shalian accomplished six times from 1997-2000.

The five goals are tied for the most goals scored in a game in Division III this season, matching Payton Swoboda of North Central Minnesota University.

Guthrie started the scoring in the 27th minute, receiving a through ball from freshman Berlin Rodriguez (Cooper City, Fla.). Guthrie punched through the Nighthawks defensive line and scored from 15 yards out, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The Nighthawks held strong in the first half, but the Saints came out firing in the second, scoring five goals in the opening 15 minutes of the half. 

Saints junior Natalie Dash (East Hampton, Mass.) made it 2-0 with her 51st-minute tally, her fourth goal of the season. Guthrie scored the next four goals for Emmanuel, capped by a penalty kick in the 60th minute to give the Saints a 6-0 lead. The four-goal outburst by Guthrie came in just over seven minutes of play. The penalty kick tally made it Guthrie's seventh goal of the season.

Nighthawks senior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) made 30 saves on the night for Newbury. The 30 saves are the most in a game in all Divisions of the NCAA this season. Sass takes the top saves spot from Lauren Young of Northern Vermont at Lyndon and Kellyn Perry of Wilson College in Pennsylvania, who both made 29 saves in a game this season.

Emmanuel junior Lexi Gawron (South Hadley, Mass.) moves to 4-1 with the win, holding the Nighthawks off the scoresheet in her 75 minutes of work.

The win moves the Saints to 4-1 while the Nighthawks dropped to 1-4 with the loss.

Newbury returns to play on Saturday, opening up conference play with a 1:00 p.m. match at Bay Path. The Saints also open up conference play on Saturday, traveling to Albertus Magnus for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
