HOW IT HAPPENED
- Strong defense throughout on both sides of the pitch was responsible for a lack of offensive chances. With only a handful of chances and none to spare, the Saints executed more often to take and keep the advantage.
- Three opposing goals in a matter of 10 minutes of game time decided the contest. Up 1-0 in the 42nd minute – off a Kaylin Deschenes unassisted score early – the Saints set up a perfect corner kick goal. Sydney Allen launched the ball toward the box as Emily Medeiros jumped up to meet it with an excellently placed header that slipped past the keeper and into the lower left.
- Following the halftime break, the Saints came out the more aggressive squad and immediately brought the ball into the Castleton zone. A Castleton handball in the box provided Emmanuel with a penalty kick, which Rachel Prevost buried for her first goal of the season.
- Completing the Saints' scoring, Natalie Dash got a breakaway opportunity and made the most of it. Castleton goalie Loren Henderson stabbed at the midfielder's original shot as she came out to make a stop. Yet, after clipping the keepers' hand, the ball continued to roll and just made it inside the right post.
- Down 4-0 in the 88th minute, Jamie Barrett executed for Castleton to get the Spartans on the board. Erin Tully led her teammate with a beautiful ball that Barrett corralled and sent past EC junior keeper Lexi Gawron.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Despite the final scoreline, the Spartans and Saints were quite close in almost every statistical category. Splitting shots down the middle, Castleton and Emmanuel each tallied 14.
- The Spartans held the advantage with seven corner kick opportunities, while both teams stopped five opposing shots.
- Between the posts, Henderson took the loss for Castleton but made five saves. Gawron poked away four would-be goals as both keepers played all 90 minutes.
- Dash has now scored in three straight games for the Saints marking the first time an Emmanuel players has scored in three straight games since Abba McKenelley accomplished the feat last season during a three-game stretch from Oct. 7 through Oct. 14.
- The 3-1 start for Emmanuel marks the first time since the 2011 season that the program has three victories through four games to open a campaign.
