SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS WOMEN'S SOCCER PAST USJ, 3-1
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Freshman midfielder Sydney Allen (Charlestown, R.I.) and sophomore defender Amanda Dziura (Lakeville, Mass.) scored second half goals to lift the Emmanuel College women’s soccer team past host University of Saint Joseph, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.

THE LEAD: Freshman midfielder Sydney Allen (Charlestown, R.I.) and sophomore defender Amanda Dziura (Lakeville, Mass.) scored second half goals to lift the Emmanuel College women's soccer team past host University of Saint Joseph, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints opened the scoring in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead on sophomore midfielder Natalie Dash's (East Hampton, Conn.) third goal of the year. Dash put home a rebound off a corner kick taken by classmate Kaylin Deschenes (Lynn, Mass.) to give EC the lead.
- USJ evened the score at 1-1 at the 36:18 marker on a direct kick taken by senior forward Jessica Spezzano (Watertown, Conn.) from 28 yards out, finding the upper left corner of the goal.
- The score remained locked at 1-all until the 70th minute when Allen scored her first collegiate goal to put the Saints on top for good to make it 2-1.
- Dziura added an insurance goal with 2:58 to play in regulation, also scoring her first collegiate tally on a rebound shot to the far post to seal the 3-1 win for Emmanuel.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Emmanuel outshot the Blue Jays by an 18-7 margin and also attempted six cornerkicks compared to just one by USJ.
- The win was the fifth in a row for the Saints who improve to 8-1-1 in GNAC play, securing no worse than the No. 3 see in next week's GNAC tournament. A win in their GNAC finale against Johnson & Wales would move Emmanuel into the No. 2 seed.
- Sophomore goalie Alexis Gawron (South Hadley, Mass.) made three saves in net for the Saints to improve to 6-4 on the year in goal.
- USJ keeper Megan Ricci (Center Moriches, N.Y.) stopped seven shots and falls to 9-5-1.
UP NEXT
- The Saints return to action on Monday, October 23 when they head to Salem, Mass. for a non-conference game vs. Salem State University at 7:00 PM.
- USJ wraps the regular season and will return next Saturday, October 28 in the GNAC tournament as the No. 5 seed and head to Saint Joseph's College (ME) for the Quarterfinal round.
