The Lead: The Emmanuel College women's soccer team played Simmons College to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Roberto Clemente Field. The teams traded early goals in each half but neither squad found the back of the net in either overtime stanza.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Simmons junior midfielder Ciara Forde (Quincy, Mass.) struck first with her team-leading third goal of the season just 3:06 into the action to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Classmate Lauren Brandau (Madison, Conn.) played a through ball that caught the Saints back four with their heads turned and Forde did the rest to give the visitors the early lead.
- The early goal was the only scoring opportunity for either team in the opening stanza as both squads combined for just five total shots over the first 45 minutes of action.
- Emmanuel returned the favor with an early second half goal to knot the game at 1-1 as junior forward Kayla Generis (Wethersfield, Conn.) played a deep cross into that box that line mate Mikayla Guthrie (North Andover, Mass.) finished home for her first goal of the season just 21 seconds into the second half.
- Late in regulation, Guthrie had a chance to put EC on top with a semi breakaway down the right side of the pitch but Simmons senior goalkeeper Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.) came off her line to break up the scoring opportunity and keep the game locked at 1-1.
- Emmanuel attempted the only shot in the first overtime frame and outshot the Sharks 3-1 in the second extra session but neither team was able to break the tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Saints owned a 19-12 advantage in shots despite being outshot by the Sharks in the first half, 3-2.
- Halle registered eight saves in net for the Sharks while EC senior keeper Victoria LaRoche (Hudson, N.H.) made six saves in her first start of the season.
- In 25 previous meetings, the two squads had never finished a contest with a tie as Simmons owned a 16-9-0 record over Emmanuel heading into the action.
- Today match marked the 10th time in 26 meetings that the Fenway rivals needed extra time to try and settle the score, with Emmanuel holding the small all-time margin now with a 5-4-1 overtime record over the Sharks.
