BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) scored with 8:59 remaining in regulation to lift Emmanuel College over Rivier University, 1-0, Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints improve to 6-7-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the GNAC while the Raiders fall to 3-5-2 and 2-4 in conference play.
Despite outshooting the visitors 20-2 in the first half, the game remained scoreless at the break behind a standout goalkeeping effort from Rivier junior Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.). The Saints opened fire on the Raider net all night, outshooting Rivier 37-7 but it wasn't until the 82nd minute of play that Emmanuel found the back of the net.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0, the Saints controlled possession deep in Rivier territory late in the second stanza. Senior forward Courtney Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) had been busy all night on the left wing, attempting seven shots but caught the defense by surprise when out in the open she decided to cut the ball back and cross it right in front of the goal instead of taking an open shot. It proved to be the right decision as Goodspeed was a few steps off her line looking for the shot and the ball carried over her head to Carey. The senior trapped the ball and the calmly passed home the game-winner for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Raiders had one good scoring opportunity late in the game as senior forward Maggie Cohoon (Derry, N.H.) beat the Saints back line on a through ball but her shot was just wide of the near side post.
Emmanuel also owned a lopsided advantage on corner kicks at 14-2 on the night.
Junior goalkeeper Victoria LaRoche (Hudson, N.H.) made three saves for the shutout win, her fifth of the year 19th of her career. Goodspeed was phenomenal in net for Rivier making 20 saves.
Emmanuel returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Anna Maria College at 3:00 PM for their senior day game. The Raiders are also back in action the same day when they head to Albertus Magnus for a 1:00 PM GNAC tilt.
