New Haven, Conn. – The Emmanuel College women's soccer team topped host Albertus Magnus College, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Celentano Field. The Falcons (4-6-1, 2-2-1) dropped their second straight league game, while the Saints (5-7-1, 2-2-1) snapped a three-game conference winless streak with the shutout victory.
The visitors opened the scoring late in the first half as sophomore midfielder Kayla Generis (Wethersfield, Conn.) converted a feed from freshman forward Kaylin Deschenes (Lynn, Mass.) in the 37th minute. The strike was the fourth of the season for Generis and proved to be the game-winner as the Saint backline and junior goalkeeper Victoria LaRoche kept (Hudson, N.H.) the hosts off the scoreboard.
Late in regulation, Emmanuel took the wind out of the Falcon sails and squashed any threat of a comeback with an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Senior midfielder Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) cleaned up a rebound on a shot from Deschenes for her sixth marker of 2016 to give EC a two-goal edge.
In net, Albertus Magnus sophomore Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.) turned aside five shots in a losing effort. On the opposite end, LaRoche made seven saves to earn the clean sheet.
Junior Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) fired a team-best three shots on goal for the hosts, while sophomore Kerrigan Loughman (Trumbull, Conn.) had two shots on target.
The Falcons have been shutout in both of their conference setbacks this fall.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, October 5, with a road conference showdown against Mount Ida that is slated to begin at 3:30 PM. Last autumn, the Falcons topped the Mustangs, 5-1, in the Elm City. Emmanuel also returns to the field next Wednesday as the Saints play host to Rivier University at 7:00 PM at Roberto Clemente Field.
