BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team snapped its seven-game winless streak with a 4-0 victory over Emmanuel College Thursday evening.
This marks the Hawks' fourth straight victory over the Saints, with Roger Williams outscoring Emmanuel 20-1 over that span.
Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.) put a scare into the Saints in the fifth minute, taking a pass on the left side and outrunning the Saint defense. She had a chance for a one-on-one with Emmanuel keeper Victoria LaRoche (Hudson, N.H.). However, Labriola dribbled it just a bit too far, allowing LaRoche to pounce on the ball and eliminate the opportunity.
The Hawks continued to attack, eventually coming through five minutes later. Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) bent a through pass around a Saint defender to a streaking Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.). Hart took the pass and knocked a shot that just hooked into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Hawk lead.
Emmanuel nearly tied the game in the 26th minute off of a header by Rachel Beliveau (West Springfield, Mass.). Kaylin Deschenes (Lynn, Mass.) served up a corner kick that eventually found the head of Believau. She wasn't able to get a lot on the shot, allowing Hawk keeper Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) to make a back-pedaling jumping save.
Roger Williams would add to its lead late in the first half, with Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) logging her first goal of the year. Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) crossed a pass into the box to Woznicki. Woznicki kicked a hard pass to Provost, allowing her to redirect the ball to the middle of the net and put RWU on top 2-0.
In the second half, RWU missed a great chance to tack on the third goal of the game. A failed clear by the Saint defense gave Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) a breakaway opportunity with LaRoche. Fortunately for the Saints, she pushed the shot just a bit too wide left. A minute later, Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) put up a point-blank shop that was stopped by LaRoche.
The Hawks finally grabbed that third goal in the 57th minute, when Broderick brought the ball down the right side and made a pass backwards to the middle of the box, giving Provost a wide-open shot on net for her second score of the game.
In the 63rd minute, the game would be delayed due to a medical emergency for a Saint player just before a Roger Williams corner kick, with LaRoche staying by her side while she was being tended to.
After the game resumed, LaRoche would play inspired ball for Emmanuel, making eight saves over the final 27 minutes of play. The Hawks though did manage one more goal on her in the 85th minute, with LeMiere-Barnes scoring the fourth and final goal of the game.
O'Donovan logged three saves for RWU in the win in 63:03 of action, while LaRoche finished with 14 saves on the night.
On Saturday, Roger Williams (1-5-2) will face Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Endicott, while Emmanuel (4-6-0) travels to Johnson & Wales.
