BOSTON, Mass. – Junior captain Victoria Laroche (Hudson, N.H.) made four saves in goal, posting her third shutout of the season, as the Emmanuel College women's soccer team (4-5) blanked UMass Boston (1-7) by a score of 2-0 on Tuesday night at Roberto Clemente Field.
Senior captain Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) scored in the 19th minute and freshman Kaylin Deschenes (Lynn, Mass.) doubled the lead in the 53rd minute to give the Saints their fourth win of the year.
Carey's goal, her fifth of the season, came after a UMB foul set up the Saints about 30 yards away from the goal. The senior midfielder lined up and drilled the direct kick into the left side of the net to put EC on the board.
The Emmanuel defense was steady throughout the night, preventing the Beacons from even attempting a shot until the 31st minute of play.
The hosts came out of the halftime break looking to double their lead and wasted little time in doing so. Senior Kali DiPilla (Sterling, Mass.) drove a cross from the far left sideline and perfectly placed it in range for Deschenes to head it past UMass Boston sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) who made nine saves in the loss.
Both sides had decent scoring opportunities in the latter stages of the second half, with each team hitting a pair of crossbars, but neither was able to touch twine and the score remained 2-0 to the final horn.
The Saints attempted 21 shots in the victory, placing 11 on goal. The Beacons answered with eight total shots and four on target.
The game included 25 fouls, with 15 going to the visitors and 10 to the Saints.
Next up for the Saints is the final non-conference game of the year as EC travels to Rhode Island on Thursday night to battle Roger Williams at 7:00 p.m. The Beacons also head to the Ocean State for their next tilt when they face Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
