- The Lead: Behind a pair of goals and an assist by MIT women's soccer junior Olivia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) a balanced offensive attack the Engineers defeated the visiting Saint of Emmanuel College, 4-0, in non-conference action on Thursday evening at Steinbrenner Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT freshman Montana Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) got the scoring started for the Engineers as she registered her second goal of the season just 7:52 into the contest. Reilly gathered the ball at the top of the box in heavy traffic and fired the ball into the top left corner for the early 1-0 advantage.
- The Engineers then notched a pair of goals within a span of 4:08 midway through the opening frame to put the game out of reach. The first marker came at the 19:28 mark when sophomore Amy Apostol (Los Gatos, Calif.) headed the ball into the back of the net off of a free kick by Struckman, who ricocheted the free kick attempt off the crossbar. The header was Apostol's second goal of the season and Struckman's first helper of the year.
- Struckman then put home her first goal of the season off a free kick from classmate Jacqueline Simmons (Houston, Texas) to make the score 3-0 before the break. Simmons was awarded the kick after a foul by the Saints which occurred right outside the corner of the box, giving MIT perfect placement of the ball.
- In the second half, MIT netted another insurance goal, but this time it was a double assisted marker on a beautiful long ball by Simmons and a quick flip by freshman Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.). S. Struckman tallied the first point of her collegiate career on an assist to her sister, who was waiting just off the goal line.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- The MIT goalkeeping duo of senior Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.) and sophomore Lily Mueller (Lakeville, Minn.) teamed up for a shutout of Emmanuel and a pair of saves. Ullmann picked up the win (2-1) and tallied one save in the first half and Mueller came on in relief to make the first stop of her collegiate career between the pipes. Emmanuel netminder Victoria LaRoche (0-4) made eight saves this evening for the Saints.
- The Engineers outshot the Saints by a 19-9 margin and held a 9-4 differential in corner kicks.
UP NEXT:
