BOSTON, Mass. - Maggie Carey scored the first goal of the young season for the Emmanuel College women's soccer team, but the Saints (0-3) were beaten by Wentworth (3-0), 5-1, in the home opener at Roberto Clemente Field on Tuesday evening.
BOSTON, Mass. - Senior captain Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) scored the first goal of the young season for the Emmanuel College women's soccer team, but the Saints (0-3) were beaten by Wentworth (3-0), 5-1, in the home opener at Roberto Clemente Field on Tuesday evening.
The Leopards took control of the game very early on when freshman Sidney Brogan (Los Angeles, Calif.) capitalized on a corner kick just ten minutes into the first half.
Senior Michelle Murphy (West Islip, N.Y.) sent the corner into the Emmanuel box and classmate Morgan Miller (Schenectady, N.Y.) deflected the ball to Brogan, who put it past Saints junior goalkeeper Victoria Laroche (Hudson, N.H.) for the game's first goal.
Brogan stepped up again twelve minutes later, setting up sophomore Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) to double the Leopards lead.
Laroche, a tri-captain for the Saints, made two key saves in the next few sequences to keep the lead at 2-0 heading into halftime.
Carey cut that lead in half when she scored her first goal of the season at 47:16. Carey stripped a Wentworth defender and buried a shot after taking just one touch in the penalty area.
Just as the Saints looked to have momentum, Brogan and the Leopards regained the two-goal edge as the freshman scored her second goal less than two minutes after Carey's strike.
The Leopards added two more tallies late in the second half, as Miller, who assisted on both of Brogan's goals, knocked a header past Laroche and freshman Shannon Sturtz (Littleton, Mass.) outpaced Saints backup keeper, freshman Alexis Gawron (South Hadley, Mass.) to run the lead to 5-1.
Miller, Brogan, junior Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.), and freshman Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.) combined for 14 shot attempts, placing 12 on goal. Poratti also earned an assist on Miller's goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) made one save in the first half to earn the win for the visitors. Sophomore Rachel Schaeffer (Lumberton, N.J.) took over in relief in the second half and made one save as well.
Laroche was dealt the loss, despite making 13 saves in just under 81 minutes.
The Leopards earned eight corner kicks, while the Saints had only three opportunities and Wentworth outshot the hosts 23-6.
The Saints return to the pitch on Thursday night as they head to Cambridge to take on MIT at 7:00 p.m. Wentworth is off until Saturday, as they visit the Curry Colonels at 2:00 p.m.
