BOSTON, Mass. - Freshmen Mikayla Guthrie (North Andover, Mass.) and Kayla Generis (Wethersfield, Conn.) each made their first career start and each scored their first collegiate goal to power the Emmanuel College Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UMass-Boston on Tuesday night at Clemente Field.
Neither team was able to find solid footing in the first half, as both sides failed to generate any real scoring opportunity.
The Saints led 8-4 in shots after the opening 45 minutes, but only put four on goal, all of which were stopped by Beacons freshman keeper Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.).
After spending most of halftime focused on pushing the attack, the Saints came out on a mission in the second frame.
In the 47th minute, junior captain Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) sent a looping cross into the box and placed it right onto the foot of Guthrie who was driving to the goal. She played a perfect touch past Fugiel and into the goal. It was Guthrie's first collegiate goal and points, while Carey picked up her first assist of the season.
Emmanuel maintained pressure following the goal and eventually doubled the lead in the 51st minute.
Generis stripped the ball from a UMass-Boston defender outside the 18, dipped through two oncoming defenders, and slipped the ball past Fugiel. Like Guthrie, the unassisted goal provided Generis with her first goal and points as a collegiate athlete.
The Saints finished with a 17-10 edge in shots, while the Beacons earned the only two corner kicks of the match.
Saints sophomore keeper Tori LaRoche (Hudson, N.H.) earned her third victory of the season and her second clean sheet as the Saints improve to 3-6 overall. Fugiel and UMass-Boston fall to 2-4-1 on the year.
Next up for the Saints is a home GNAC contest at Clemente Field on Thursday against Johnson & Wales at 7 p.m. The Beacons travel to Southern Maine on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start.
