NEWTON, Mass. – After trailing 2-0 early in the contest, the Emmanuel College women's soccer team scored eight unanswered goals to defeat Mount Ida College, 8-2, Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. The win snaps a five-game losing skid for the Saints, the program's longest slide since 2003.
Junior forward Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored in the 6th minute of play to give the Mustangs the early 1-0 advantage before senior midfielder Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) put Mount Ida ahead by two goals off a strike from thirty yards out that beat the outstretched Emmanuel keeper, Jenna Marcello (Hopedale, Mass.) in the upper corner.
However, just over a minute later, Emmanuel would cut the hosts lead in half when Hannah Konecki (Milford, Conn.) slid a ball on the ground past Mustang net minder Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.) to make it 2-1. The Saints continued the spree in the 19th minute when Savannah Lundwall (Fiskdale, Mass.) put a ball across the box to the foot of teammate Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, Mass.) who was waiting at the top of the six yard box for the tally to pull Emmanuel even with the Mustangs.
Dumas struck again halfway through the first half, except this time finding the feet of Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) who struck a ball that beat Soto while giving Emmanuel the 3-2 edge just twenty-seven minutes into the game. Molly Carey (Lynn, Mass.) lined up for a corner kick in the latter moments of the opening half and saw her attempt from the corner flag find the back of the net untouched as the ball skipped on the wet turf and found the side netting back post, giving Emmanuel the 4-2 lead at the break.
Alison MacDonald (Peabody, Mass.) increased the visitors lead to 5-2 nine minutes into the second stanza. Soto came off her line to make the initial save and MacDonald beat her to the ball while slipping the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Dumas wasn't done for the night as she tallied her second goal of the contest and 5th point of the night when Maggie Carey, slipped a through ball to her Dumas' feet where she went one on one with Soto and was able to thread the ball past the diving Mustang keeper. Courtney Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and Hailey Longbottom (Princeton, Mass.) finished the scoring for Emmanuel in the 75th and 79 minutes and gave the Saints their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season by a final of 8-2.
With the win, Emmanuel improves to 4-7 (2-2 GNAC) while Mount Ida drops to 3-7 (2-2 GNAC). Marcello earned the win for the Saints while Soto drops to 3-2 on the season.
Emmanuel held the advantage in shots 24-11, while also holding the edge in corner kicks 5-4.
Mount Ida will remain idle for the next two days before traveling to GNAC foe Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon with kickoff slated for 4:00. Emmanuel will host Rivier on Saturday with kickoff set for 1:00.
