BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer Team utilized a second-half barrage to power to a 8-1 win over Emmanuel College on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks' eight-goal second half included a school-record five from junior forward Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.).
The Hawks had chances to score throughout most of the first half. In the 20th minute, Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) squeezed a centering pass to Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.), who put her shot just wide left of the net. Three minutes later, Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) got ahead of a through pass and put up a shot against an incoming Victoria Laroche (Hudson, N.H.), who made the key save from point-blank range.
Laroche had another strong stop in the 28th minute, saving a shot by Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) from less than 20 feet out. In all, Laroche would make five saves in the period to help keep the game remain scoreless at halftime.
The second half saw the tide turn in the Hawks' favor. Five minutes into the half, Kaiser made her way into the box, spinning around a Saint defender and chipping a shot into the left corner to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Kaiser wasn't done, as she took a pass up the middle from Tetreault a minute later and buried a shot into the right corner, putting the Hawks up 2-0. She would complete the hat trick in the 63rd minute, bouncing a shot of the underside of the post and having it just bounce inside the goal line.
EC junior Hannah Konicki (Milford, Conn.) was able to get the Saints on the board in the 66th minute, sending a long chip shot over the head of Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) and bouncing it in, to pull the Saints within two.
Less than two minutes later, Kaiser ran down a pass from Valenti and buried it for her fourth score of the game. Then in the 72nd minute, Tetreault knocked in a put-back off of a deflected save. Three minutes later, Kaiser headed in her fifth goal of the game off of a corner kick by Casey, setting a new school record for most individual goals in a single RWU contest.
Valenti later got in on the action in the 79th minute, putting in her third goal of the season off of a pass from Cagnie Antczak (Kendall Park, N.J.). Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.) closed out things for RWU, taking the pass from Carla Salcedo (Mexico City, Mexico) and beating the keeper for her first score of the year.
Martin made four saves in the game for RWU in the win, with Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) making one save in 10:49 of relief. Laroche finished with eight saves for the Saints, while Abaigeal Thivierge (Bennington, Vt.) stopped four shots.
