BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College put together its second-straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) shutout, notching a 4-0 win over the visiting Mustangs of Mount Ida College on Saturday afternoon. The Saints' Family Weekend women's soccer game was played on a beautiful fall day at Roberto Clemente Field. The win boosted the Saints ledger to 8-7-2 on the season and 6-2-1 in GNAC action, while the loss dropped the Mustangs to 2-12 overall and 1-8 in league play.
The Saints, still battling for home field advantage in the first round of the GNAC Tournament, eased to the crucial victory over the visiting Mustangs. Emmanuel possessed the ball well, dominating much of the offense throughout the game. The hosts held a solid 29-4 shooting advantage and a 13-3 shots-on-goal margin over the 90-minute contest.
Senior Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.) and freshman Courtney Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) scored just 36 seconds apart to give Emmanuel an early 2-0 lead ten minutes into the action. The Saints out-shot the Mustangs 16-3 in the first half and carried the two-goal lead into the break at halftime.
Sullivan would net her second goal of the game and eighth of the season twenty minutes into the second half of play and EC held a 3-0 lead. The goal was the 27th in Sullivan's four-year collegiate career.
With just five minutes remaining in the game, freshman Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) found classmate Catherine Edmonds (Acton, Mass.) open on the left sideline. Edmonds fired off her shot from deep outside the box and drilled it into the back of the Mustang goal. This was the third goal of Edmond's rookie season.
Emmanuel's sophomore keeper Brenna Smith (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned the win in the cage for the Saints, stopping all three Mustang shots-on-goal, to improve to 4-5 on the season. Junior Abaigeal Thivierge (Bennington, Vt.) replaced Smith in goal for the final fourteen minutes of action and preserved the shutout win for the Saints.
Mount Ida's freshman keeper Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) took the loss between the pipes for the visitors, but made 9 saves in the effort.
Mount Ida will take the field again next Wednesday, when the Mustangs travel to Norwich University for a 7:15 PM kick-off with the Cadets. Emmanuel will also return to action on Wednesday, when the Saints travel to West Hartford, Connecticut for a 3:30 PM start with the University of Saint Joseph. Emmanuel returns home next Saturday (10/26) for the final regular season contest versus Albertus Magnus College at 3:00 PM. The Saints, currently sitting in a tie for fourth place in the league standings, will need to win at least one of the next two conference games in order to secure a home game for the upcoming GNAC play-offs.
