BOSTON, Mass. – Two second half goals propelled the Emmanuel College women's soccer team past Emerson College, 2-0, Tuesday evening at Rotch Playground Field. With the loss the Lions are now 4-4 on the year as Emmanuel improves to 3-5-2.
The first half saw the Lions outshoot the Saints 14-to-6 but they just couldn't seem to find the target in the first 45 minutes of action. The Lions were more physical though as they collected six fouls to Emmanuel's one as the half ran out still tied in a 0-0 stalemate.
The second half saw the Saints surge though, this time putting up 16-to-11 shots on Emerson, making keeper Marissa Macdonald work for it as she was forced to make six saves in the half. EC sophomore forward Hannah Konicki (Milford, Mass.) led the field on the night with five shots, two on goal as she finally broke the tie in the 68th minute of play after a scrum in front of the net found her with the ball that she dropped into the right corner to make it 1-0. The goal was the first of Konicki's collegiate career.
It was only five minutes later that the Saints struck again as freshman forward Courtney Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) lost the Lion defense before she put one over Macdonald's head into the right side of the net. While Emerson pushed to claw back in the game, Emmanuel junior keeper Abaigeal Thivierge (Bennington, Vt.) stepped up to make five saves and preserve the shutout.
Emerson goalkeepers Marissa MacDonald and Melanie Escobar combined for nine saves over the 90 minutes of action.
The Saints return to action this weekend in GNAC action when they head across the road to take on Simmons College at 11:00 AM. Emerson Women's Soccer hits the road on Thursday night as they travel to Regis for a 4:30 PM game in Weston, Mass.
