MILTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer Team held on for nearly 88 minutes, before dropping a 3-2 decision to Curry College in non-conference action played at the Walter M. Katz Field on Thursday night. With the win, the Colonels improved to 5-1 overall. The Saints fell to 2-5-1 on the season.
Emmanuel was first to get on the board just 13:20 into the opening frame. The Saints earned a corner kick which was taken by senior Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.). Sullivan sent the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box. Teammate senior Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) was able to get a touch on it and one-timed it into the back of the net past Curry's senior goaltender Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.).
Just 8:21 minutes later, the Colonels netted their first of the night to tie the game. Sophomore Felicia Vieira (Bristol, R.I.) came off the bench and wasn't in for more than 30 seconds before she won a ball over the 20-yard line and got the assist. Vieira sent a pass to freshman Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) who shot into the lower left corner of the net past Emmanuel's sophomore goaltender Brenna Smith (Watagh, N.Y.).
After the first half, Curry had 11 shots, six saves, four fouls and four corner kicks. Emmanuel had 10 shots, four saves, five fouls and one corner kick.
The Saints started the second half strong taking four shots to the Colonels' two in the first six minutes of play. Emmanuel kept the play going in their offensive end for the first 10 minutes. The Colonels got two shots off during that time, one resulting in a goal to take the 2-1 lead.
The Curry goal came at the 34:02 minute mark by Lima. Lima worked it around an Emmanuel defender and sent a high ball over the head of Smith. Less than two minutes later, the Saints evened the score when Sullivan sent a through pass to junior Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, Mass.). Dumas was wide open in front of the net and tapped the ball low into the back for the tally. Sullivan picked up her second assist of the night on the goal.
The score remained tied at two and the game looked as though it would be headed into overtime. Lima however netted the game-winner and her second hat trick of the season, when she was awarded a penalty kick with two minutes showing on the clock.
The Saints were called for a foul inside the box, which allowed for the Curry PK. Lima was selected for the task and nailed the game-winner, perfectly placing the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Saints would not go down easily and had two big chances with under 30 seconds to play to tie the match. However, Lorge made two outstanding saves between the pipes and propelled Curry to its fifth win of the year.
Curry finished with 18 shots, four corners and 10 fouls. Emmanuel ended the night with 29 shots, four corners and 10 fouls.
Lorge made a career-high 16 saves in net for the win. Smith made six saves in the loss.
