BOSTON, Mass. – Junior forward Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) netted a pair of goals to lead the Emmanuel College women's soccer team past Johnson & Wales University, 2-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Tuesday evening at Clemente Field. With the win, EC improves to 7-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the GNAC while the loss drops the Wildcats to 4-7 and 3-3 in the GNAC.
Garvey put Emmanuel on the board with her fourth goal of the year just 4:46 into the game when she headed home a cornerkick taken by sophomore midfielder Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.). Sullivan's ball was played towards the back post and Garvey was able to find room towards the back post for her fourth tally of the season to make it a 1-0 game in favor of the Saints.
Johnson & Wales had a great look to even the score with about 21:00 to play in the opening stanza but the right footed shot by sophomore midfielder Nicole Petrone (Branchburg, N.J.) sailed just past the far post
The action remained back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half as the Saints owned a 5-2 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in cornerkicks.
Early in the second half, Sullivan had a great look to give Emmanuel a two-goal lead after receiving a well timed through-ball from senior midfielder Brittany Ridge (Portland, Maine). Sullivan was able to cut the ball inside to her strong foot and fire a left-footed shot towards the lower right corner of the net but JWU freshman keeper Alexa Rose (Lancaser, Pa.) was able to come away with a diving save to keep the Wildcats within a goal.
With 22+ minutes remaining in regulation, JWU sophomore midfielder Eryn Mahoney (Merrimack, N.H.) ripped a hard shot towards the upper third of the goal but EC senior goalkeeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) was able to hang on to the ball even with the steady rain coming down to keep the Saints ahead by a score.
Minutes later, Garvey added a huge insurance goal to make it a 2-0 contest. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Roberts (Hudson, N.H.) played a cross from the left side of the field into the Wildcats box. An awkward skip by the wet ball allowed for Garvey to sneak in past the Wildcats back line and put home her second goal of the contest with 20:03 remaining. The score was her fifth of the year.
EC sophomore forward Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, Mass.) made it 3-0 with her third goal of the year 6:40 left on the clock. Following a broken defensive play, Dumas found the ball at her foot from just outside the JWU six-yard box. She was able to calmly poke the ball past a diving Rose to give the hosts the comfortable three-goal advantage.
D'Ottavio ended the night with four saves for Emmanuel to register her third shutout of the season while Rose made five stops for Johnson & Wales.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they host Emerson College in another GNAC matchup with a 3:00 PM start time while the Wildcats are back the same day, hosting Albertus Magnus College at 1:00 PM in GNAC play.
