Newton, Mass. - The Emmanuel College women's soccer team trailed 1-0 at halftime but netted four unanswered goals in the second stanza to take a 4-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win against host Mount Ida College Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field in Newton, Massachusetts.
The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 3-4-0 with a conference slate of 1-3-0 while the Saints improve to 5-3-1 for 2012 with a GNAC record of 2-1-1.
The Mustangs got on the board in the 11th minute of play off a rebound that was redirected by junior transfer Brianna Tomaselli (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) that ricocheted off a Saints defender rolling into the net for an own goal giving the hosts the 1-0 early advantage.
Mount Ida had numerous chances coming out strong early on with most of the action down in Emmanuel's defensive side through the first 20 minutes of the contest but failed to convert. But the flow of the game towards the final 25 ticks of play in the first stanza slowly started going towards the visitors heading into the second half with most of the momentum with the Saints.
The Mustangs were completely out of gas heading into the final half only able to muster two shots through the final 45 minutes of play. The visitors however went off scoring four goals to seal off the GNAC win with no answer from the hosts.
Sophomore Amanda Roberts (Hudson, NH/Alvirine) added the first Emmanuel goal on a dish from fellow sophomore Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, MA/Wahconoh Regional) off a rebound to knot the game at 1-1.
The Mustangs helped out their opponents on their second score with an own goal, the second of the game, giving the visitors the 2-1 lead.
Mount Ida could not regroup from there surrendering the third goal of the game to Saints freshman Katelyn Fink (Sanford, ME/Sanford). The referee awarded the visitors a penalty shot after a hard foul by the Mustangs in the box. The attempt went off the right post that was redirected by Fink towards the net that was stuffed by host goaltender Samantha Basler (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North). An unfortunate bounce for Mount Ida went right back to Fink depositing the ball into the corner to take a 3-1 advantage.
Dumas would add the final goal of the contest for the visitors into the lower right corner on a feed from junior midfielder Donandrea Myette (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) for the 4-1 league win.
Basler made 11 saves and was outstanding for Mount Ida but Emmanuel pounded 28 shots on net making for a long day for the host net minder. For the visitors, senior goaltender Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, NY/Pawling) only saw nine Mustang shots stopping three shots.
Mount Ida will head to GNAC member Emerson College on Tuesday with game time TBA while the Saints host the University of St. Joseph (CT) Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in league action.
