BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College women's soccer team battled Norwich University for 110 minutes but after two overtime periods the Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup ended in a 2-2 tie. With the draw, the Saints now stand at 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in GNAC play while the Cadets are 1-4-2 and 0-2-2 in the GNAC.
The Saints opened the scoring with at the 16:54 marker of the first half when junior forward Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) sent a cross from to the opposite side of the box, finding her classmate Donandrea Myette (Portsmouth, R.I.) at the top of the box. Myette blasted home her second goal of the year to the far post to give the hosts the 1-0 advantage.
EC would make it 2-0 just 2:08 into the second half when Garvey netted her second goal of the season off a feed from senior forward Meghan Zerba (Cumberland, R.I.). The Saints were in total control of the game until the Cadets were able to draw a foul in the Emmanuel box at the 51:25 mark to earn a penalty kick. Senior forward Brittany Casey (Pointe-Claire, Que.) calmly stepped up and drilled home her first goal of the year to cut the deficit in half to make it a 2-1 game with lots of action still remaining in the frame.
Emmanuel had a chance to make it a 3-1 game with a penalty kick of their own following a handball in the Cadet's box but the ensuing kick hit the crossbar.
The Cadets continued to battle and got the equalizer with just over six minutes remaining in regulation when sophomore midfielder Alex Frank (Medford, N.J.) took a cross from Casey from about 25 yards out and ripped home her second goal of the season to even the score at 2-2.
Neither team had a good scoring opportunity in the first overtime period and it was evident that both teams were fatigued late in the second overtime session with lots of long balls being played at both ends of the field. With 30 seconds left in the action, Emmanuel was able to play a long ball to a streaking Garvey who had the NU backline in a dead sprint to recover. Garvey was able to get deep into the Cadet's box before dumping the ball to senior midfielder Brittany Ridge (Portland, Maine) for a great look to win the game but the senior tri-captains shot sailed wide right and time expired before the ball was put back in play.
The Saints outshot the Cadets, 25-15 and also had the edge on corner kicks, 9-3.
In goal, Emmanuel senior keeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) made eight saves while Norwich junior keeper Allison Hull pulled in 10 stops.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday when they head to Newton, MA for a 1:00 PM GNAC contest against Mount Ida College while the Cadets play the same day when they host Anna Maria at 1:00 PM.
