BOSTON – In their first game on Clemente Field of 2024, the Emmanuel Saints women's lacrosse team picked up a 9-8 win over the Worcester State Lancers on Thursday night in non-conference play.
The Saints finish up their stretch against non-conference opponents to start the season at 2-3 while the Lancers drop to 4-2 with the road loss.
It took until the final 10 minutes on Thursday night for Saints to take their first lead against the Lancers as a free-position and player-up goal for sophomore Ella Marschitz (Naperville, Ill.) with 9:06 remaining in the game gave Emmanuel an 8-7 lead.
Worcester State answered back with 4:22 remaining after a Saints yellow card left them a player down. Lancers junior Abigail Wing (Griswold, Conn.) took a feed from junior Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and scored to tie the game at 8-8.
Nearly two minutes later, Marschitz tallied the eventual game-winner as a pass from junior Dejaliyah Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.) found a cutting Marschitz, who scored with 2:28 remaining and gave Emmanuel a 9-8 edge.
Worcester State would claim their final possession of the game with less than a minute and a chance to tie but strong defense from Saints junior Delaney Brown (Agawam, Mass.) caused a turnover with 31 seconds remaining. After an Emmanuel timeout, the Saints managed to run out the final seconds and claim the Thursday night victory.
The final possession for Worcester State nearly continued a theme for the Lancers on Thursday evening as goals in the first three quarters by Wing, sophomore Molly Witkowski (Greenville, N.Y.), and grad student Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) were all scored as the clock hit 0.0 seconds in the respective quarters.
Marschitz finished with the two goals to go along with three ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers.
