THE LEAD – Sophomore Madeleine Gould (Oakdale, Conn.) tied her career-high with seven goal in Johnson & Wales (RI) University's 14-5 win over Emmanuel (MA) College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Lacrosse Quarterfinal action Wednesday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emmanuel opened the scoring on an unassisted marker by sophomore Deja Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.) but it would prove to be EC's only lead of the afternoon as the Wildcats answered with a pair of goals from Maris DiBeneditto (Southbury, Conn.) to pull ahead, 2-1, with 11:07 to play in the opening frame.
- Minutes later, senior Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine) tied the score at 2-2 before DiBeneditto gave JWU the lead for good at 3-2 with 5:17 left in the first. Gould added her first of the game less than a minute later to account for a 4-2 score through one.
- Srimouksavanh opened the second quarter the same way as the first, netting her second of the game to make it 4-3 but Johnson & Wales ended the half strong with two goals over the final five minutes, giving the hosts a 6-3 lead at the break.
- For the third straight quarter, Emmanuel scored first in the third on a marker by first year Broghan Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) to get within a pair at 6-4 but it was the closest they'd come as JWU rattled off the next four goals including three straight from Gould to bump the lead to 10-4. EC first year Emily Gates (Waterford, Conn.) got one back before the end of the third but it was Emmanuel's final goal of the afternoon to make it 10-5 through 45 minutes.
- The fourth was all JWU as the Wildcats held the Saints scoreless while tacking on four goals to account for the 14-5 final.
