THE LEAD – The Emmanuel women's lacrosse team had 10 different goal scorers while netting nine goals in each half, as the Saints took home an 18-14 road win on Saturday afternoon against Norwich in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints were out to a quick lead, scoring the first three goals of Saturday's game in the opening 3:48 of the match. First-year Brianna Stephenson (Waterboro, Maine), sophomore Deja Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.), and senior Ali Bergin (Newbury, Mass.) were the goal scorers responsible for the 3-0 EC lead. The Saints and Cadets traded goals in the final 10 minutes of the quarter, as Emmanuel led 5-3 after 15 minutes.
- The Saints lead evaporated quickly in the second quarter as Cadets goals by senior Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) and graduate student Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.), in the opening 50 seconds of the second quarter, tied things at 5-5.
- Emmanuel quickly regained the momentum they had early in the match, rattling off four consecutive goals. First-year Avery Robillard (Rowley, Mass.) and sophomore Rachel Canedy (Woodstock, Conn.), along with Srimouksavanh and Stephenson, helped the Saints to a 9-5 edge. Norwich's Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) capped the scoring in the second quarter, as EC held a 9-6 lead at the half.
- Etherton was back to start the scoring in the second half, cutting the NU deficit to 9-7, but another Saints four-goal outburst quickly followed, helping EC to their largest lead at 13-7. The Cadets answered back with three straight tallies, but first-year Livia Fedele (Spencerport, N.Y.) had the last goal of the quarter that saw Emmanuel lead 14-10.
- Norwich could never get closer than three after Etherton opened the fourth quarter scoring, cutting the EC lead to 14-11. The Saints managed to keep pace with the Cadets over the final 15 minutes and despite a late comeback attempt by the Cadets with goals by Etherton and Furchak, the Saints came away victorious in Saturday's 18-14 win.
