THE LEAD – Saint Joseph's College (ME) used a strong second half performance to pull away from host Emmanuel College to earn a 13-8 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SJM grad student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) broke a 4-4 tie late in the second quarter to give the Monks a 5-4 edge heading into halftime, a lead which they would not relinquish the rest of the day.
- Dexter opened the third quarter with another score to move the score to 6-4 before EC senior Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine) pulled the hosts back to within a goal a 6-5 with 6:36 left in the stanza.
- Junior Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) gave the Monks a 7-5 lead with her 100th career point before sophomore Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) gave Saint Joseph's some breathing room with 5:00 left in the third, extending the lead to 8-5.
- EC first year Livia Fedele (Spencerport, N.Y.) got the final goal of quarter to keep the Saints within striking distance at 8-6 heading into the final period.
- The Monks squashed any chance of a comeback with three scores to start the fourth as Collins, Siebert and junior Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) all found the twine to open up an 11-6 cushion.
- The squads traded goals over the final 7:22 on the clock to account for the 13-8 final as EC got scores from first years Ella Marschitz (Naperville, Ill.) and Emily Gates (Waterford, Conn.) while Battaglia and Dexter capped the scoring for SJM in the road win.
- Emmanuel led 3-2 after the first quarter as Gates, first year Broghan Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) and Steele each scored but the Monks responded with a strong second quarter as sophomore Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) scored while Dexter added two including the go-ahead tally late in the half to change the momentum of the contest.
