THE LEAD – Saints women's lacrosse used a 9-2 second quarter on Friday afternoon to claim a Great Northeast Athletic Conference win, 20-8, over the Colby-Sawyer Chargers at Sally Shaw Veitch Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Saints and Chargers traded goals in the first eight minutes of the first quarter, three goals in the final 3:15 resulted in a Saints 3-2 lead. First-year Ella Marschitz (Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Alyssa Hogan (Westborough, Mass.) scored 1:21 apart, resulting in the EC one-goal lead through the first quarter.
- Emmanuel and Colby-Sawyer again traded goals to start the second quarter, but the Saints would build a sizeable advantage, running off a string of eight consecutive goals over a span of 8:34. First-years Avery Robillard (Rowley, Mass.) and Livia Fedele (Spencerport, N.Y.) scored 58 seconds apart to start the scoring spree, giving EC a 6-3 lead.
- Marschitz, sophomore Rachel Canedy (Woodstock, Conn.) and first-year Emily Gates (Waterford, Conn.) were next on the board, boosting the edge to 9-3. Fedele scored another pair while senior Ali Bergin (Newbury, Mass.) capped off the eight-goal streak, giving Emmanuel a 12-3 lead. CSC scored the last goal of the first half with 14 seconds remaining, resulting in EC holding a 12-4 lead at half.
- Emmanuel came out of halftime and quickly boosted their lead to double digits thanks to a goal from Canedy and back-to-back scores by sophomore Deja Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.), giving EC a 15-4 lead.
- Over the final 30 minutes, the Chargers could only draw as close as eight, as the Saints kept a comfortable lead over Colby-Sawyer, on the way to the 20-8 GNAC win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fedele and Gates each finished with four goals and one assist for the Saints. Fedele added a caused turnover while Gates chipped in two ground balls.
- Marschitz and Srimouksavanh each had a hat trick, joining Fedele and Gates with at least three goals in the game.
- Sophomore Isabella Thomas (Miami, Fla.) made 10 saves on the afternoon, improving to 2-0 on the season.
- Chargers first-year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) led the team with a pair of goals. Four other Chargers finished the game with one goal and one assist.
UP NEXT
- The Saints welcome non-conference opponent Salem State for ECs home opener on Wednesday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. on Clemente Field.
- The Chargers head out on their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., where they will face Worcester State on Tuesday, March 14, with the game time yet to be announced.
