THE LEAD: Emmanuel College scored four straight goals to close the first half followed by three consecutive tallies to open the second to pull away from visiting Simmons University, 14-9, Saturday morning in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Roberto Clemente Field. The 4-0 start for the Saints in the best in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine) but the Sharks responded with five straight scores to build a 5-1 lead following a goal by sophomore Elizabeth Krenicky (Burlington, Conn.) on a free-position shot with 11:45 to play in the half.
- Emmanuel answered with a 4-0 flurry to close the stanza with goals by senior Emily Saef (Moultonborough, N.H.), junior Chandra Franca (Woburn, Mass.), senior Elizabeth Fortier (Newburyport, Mass.) and junior Lincoln Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine). Hamblett's goal proved to be a game-changer, shifting momentum when she found the back of the net with just three seconds left on the shot clock to even the score at 5-5.
- Out of the break, junior Jessica Borduas (Woodbury, Conn.), Saef and Franca scored in succession to bump the hosts lead to 8-5 with 19:35 left in the action.
- With 17:23 to play, Emmanuel had a player removed from the game giving the Sharks a four-minute man-up opportunity in which they immediately capitalized on to cut the lead to 8-6 on a goal by sophomore Lauren Whitman (Mansfield, Mass.).
- EC dug deep and played some of its best lacrosse on the day with the man-down netting three goals during the penalty to push the lead to 11-6. Saef scored two in a row followed by a third-man down tally by Fortier.
- Saef doubled the Sharks up at 12-6 with her fifth goal of the action and netted her final goal with 8:44 to play to make it a 13-8 score.
- The squads traded goals late in the action as Borduas capped the scoring to account for the 14-9 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Saef matched her career-high with eight points (6 goals, 2 assists) while Borduas, Fortier and Franca all added two goals in the win.
