BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) and freshman Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) combined for 14 points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team downed Emmanuel College, 17-10, on Monday evening on Sweeney Field.
The Leopards extend their win streak to three games, improving to 3-0 on the season for the first time in program history while the loss drops the Saints to an 0-1 start to open their campaign.
Rogers led all players with six goals, five of which came in the second half. Freshman Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.) broke open the scoring within the first minute, but Emmanuel's Jessica Borduas (Woodbury, Conn.) answered to tie things up 1-1. Galan and Emmanuel freshman Chandra Franca (Woburn, Mass.) traded points for the 2-2 score, before Saints' sophomore Emily Saef (Moultonborough, Mass.) and junior Kylie Rice (Bethlehem, Conn.) erased a two-goal deficit to again deadlock the game 5-5. With just under five minutes to go in the first half, Rogers and Galan netted back-to-back goals for WIT to lead 7-5 at halftime.
Wentworth never surrendered the lead until the final buzzer, as sophomore Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) made 11 saves in second-half action to lead a strong defensive effort. Galan gave WIT its largest lead of nine goals with 1:29 to go, with Emmanuel netting two last-chance goals from Saef and Elizabeth Fortier (Newburyport, Mass.).
Kuhns earns her third win in the cage for the Black & Gold with 12 saves, while Bethany Bonilla (Milton, Mass.) made 14 saves in the setback
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Wentworth hosts Wellesley College at Sweeney Field at 6:00 PM while Emmanuel hosts Anna Maria College at 7:00 PM on Roberto Clemente Field for both their home and GNAC opener.
