WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Emmanuel College had four players in doubles figures and shot 50 percent (38-for-76) from the floor, as the Saints defeated Saint Joseph College, 92-49, on Thursday night at the O'Connell Center. Emmanuel's sophomore guard Breanna Ockimey (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a team-high 16 points off the bench and freshman Fiona O'Dwyer (Stamford, Conn.) notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Emmanuel improved to 18-5 overall and 9-2 in the GNAC with the win. Saint Joseph is now 4-19 on the season and 0-11 in the league.
Saint Joseph played well and stayed in the game for the opening 26 minutes until the sharp-shooting Saints pulled away for good. The Blue Jays trailed 47-35 at halftime and 55-41 with 14 minutes left, but Emmanuel made three-pointers on three consecutive possessions in the next 80 seconds and began to ease away.
Ockimey's 16 points came on 70% shooting (7 for 10) and was good enough for game-high honors. She netted the 16 points in just 18 minutes of action, while also hauling in 5 rebounds. Rookie guard Tiaunna Nieves (Springfield, Mass.) posted her second-straight game scoring 15 points for the Saints, knocking down three tri-fectas in the win. O'Dwyer's double-double included 12 points and 10 boards, with 9 coming on the defensive end. Senior tri-captain Meredith Shaw (Yarmouth, Me) tallied 11 points on 4 for 6 shooting, while freshman guard Chenae Earle (South Orange, N.J.) dished out a game-high 7 assists in the win.
As a team, the Saints out-rebounded the Blue Jays, 58-28. Emmanuel, which was playing the game without their two leading scorers (Iman Davis and Kristin LeBel) dished out an incredible 26 assists en route to the teams team's 38 total field goals.
Saint Joseph junior Ilaria Schiano (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Blue Jays with 14 points. Sophomore Samantha Royce (Portland, Conn.) and sophomore Michelle Fillion (Killingworth, Conn.) scored eight points apiece.
Saint Joseph finishes its season Saturday Feb. 20, hosting Pine Manor at 1 p.m. Emmanuel will host Johnson & Wales University on Saturday in the WBCA Pink Zone game at 1pm. The four seniors on the Emmanuel team will be honored prior to the start of the game.
