Jan. 3, 2009
WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Junior guard Iman Davis (Toms River, N.J.) poured in 25 points, including the 1,000th of her career, in an 84-76 loss to Northwood University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints took on the NAIA Division II Seahawks in a non-conference game played on the West Palm Beach campus of Northwood University. With the loss, the Saints fell to 5-4 on the season, while Northwood snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 10-3 overall.
Davis entered the game just seven points shy of the highly coveted 1,000-point plateau. She easily surpassed the milestone, dropping 25 points in the effort. Davis is the 19th player in the history of the Emmanuel Women's Basketball program to score over 1,000 points in a collegiate career.
Northwood's Caitlin Noble broke out of a shooting slump and Christina Daniels came off the bench to score a season high 18 points to lead the Seahawks. In a physical game that featured a whopping 64 fouls, the Seahawks sunk 79.5% of their foul shots (31-39), including a perfect 15-for-15 performance by Taylor Wencis.
The game was nip and tuck through the first half, with the Saints taking a five point lead on a basket by Davis, while the Seahawks responded with hoops by Ashley LaCount and Daniels for a 15-12 lead with 12:31 to play in the first half. A three pointer from Bary Levy and another bucket from Daniels boosted the lead out to six (22-16), but the Saints countered with a three-ball by rookie guard Breanna Ockimey to take a 23-22 lead at the 5:40 mark. The Lady Seahawks finished the half on a 12-5 run, fueled by eight points from Noble and a pair of free throws by LaCount.
The second half, featured the Seahawks stretching their lead to 43-31 on a lay-up by Levy. The Saints countered with a four point play by sophomore guard Kristin LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) and two free throws from Davis to cut the lead to 45-41. A three-point play from by made it a 47-46 game.
The Lady Seahawks tried to pull away, going on a 16-6 run capped by Wencis' layup with 5:47 to play for a 63-53 lead, but the Saints would not go away, closing to within three (73-70) on a pair of foul shots by freshman guard Karin Bird (Lee, Mass). Six foul shots from Daniels and two more from Wencis finally put the game out of reach for the Saints. Northwood also held a 43-35 edge on the glass.
LeBel led all scorers with 29 points, while Wencis led Northwood with a career high 24 points. She also dished out a game-high 12 assists in the win. Daniels pulled down a team best nine rebounds. Noble, who had shot just 26% (13-for-50) in her last five games, scored 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including 5-of-9 from downtown. The Saints netted 31 of their 39 free throw attempts (79.5%) and forced 26 Northwood turnovers, but could not come away with the win.
The Lady Seahawks will be in action on Tuesday, January 6 at 7 p.m., taking on the College of St. Mary (Neb.). Emmanuel will host Tufts University on Wednesday (1/7) at 7pm in the Jean Yawkey Center.
