Balanced Scoring Effort Leads Emmanuel Past Mitchell 73-43
BOSTON – A field goal from all 12 available Saints led Emmanuel Women’s Basketball (8-8, 5-1 GNAC) past the Mitchell College Mariners (2-12, 0-6 GNAC) Saturday afternoon on Andy Yosinoff Court. Seven different Saints posted seven points or more in the win that held Emmanuel in a tie for second place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
BOSTON – At least one field goal from all 12 available Saints led Emmanuel Women's Basketball (8-8, 5-1 GNAC) past the Mitchell College Mariners (2-12, 0-6 GNAC) Saturday afternoon on Andy Yosinoff Court. Seven different Saints posted seven points or more in the win that held Emmanuel in a tie for second place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
The home team jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six points of the game on baskets from three different players. Led by Desiree Robinson (New Haven, Conn.) and Paris Atuahene (Phoenix, Ariz), the Saints continued to grow their lead throughout the quarter. A Reganne French (Chicago, Ill.) buzzer-beating mid-range jump shot capped off a dominant ten minutes and gave Emmanuel a 21-9 advantage after one quarter of play.
The Mariners kept paced with the Saints throughout the second quarter. Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.), the GNAC's leading scorer (24.4 PPG), contributed seven points in the period to keep the Mariners within striking distance. Emmanuel maintained a 14-point lead at 40-26 as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Emmanuel looked to put the game out of reach for the visiting Mariners in the third quarter. Yosinoff's Saints stepped up on the defensive end, forcing eight Mitchell turnovers while holding the vistors to just 1/12 shooting in the period. Eight different scorers in the quarter helped Emmanuel take over the quarter and lead 59-27 with ten minutes left to go.
Emmanuel continued to hold on to their advantage throughout the final quarter. First-year guard Emma Tenters (Jaffrey, N.H.) posted six points in the period and finished the game with a career-high of nine. The Saints marched on with a 73-43 victory.
First-year guard Meagan Schuermann (Cooperstown, N.Y.) led all Emmanuel scorers with 11 points. Robinson finished with 10 points while first-year forward Kalia Saunders (Lakesville, Pa.) posted a career-high of eight. First-year center Kaitlyn Bartash (Standish, Maine) added five blocks to go along with her four points and team-leading eight rebounds. It was her third game of the season with at least five blocks. A 45.5% field goal percentage on 30/66 shooting marked a new season-high for Saints Women's Basketball.
For Mitchell, Santos finished with a game-leading 23 points. Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) added 10 points for the visitors.
Up next, Mitchell will return to New London to host a GNAC matchup with the University of St. Joseph's (CT) on Wednesday (1/24) at 5:00 P.M. The Saints will face a non-conference visit from Bowdoin on Monday (1/22) at 7:00 P.M. on Andy Yosinoff Court.
