THE LEAD – Another strong second-half performance from the Emmanuel Saints helped them to their 14th straight victory, this one on Senior Night, as the Saints defeated the Coast Guard Academy Bears 72-58 on Yosinoff Court in Monday's non-conference game.
Prior to the start of Monday's game, the Saints women's basketball program honored the graduating class of players that included Korie Mathis (Duluth, Ga.), Jamad Fiin (Boston, Mass.), Riley Lahiff (North Attleboro, Mass.), and Loredana D'Agostino (Broad Brook, Conn.).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The story again on Monday night was the halftime adjustments of the Saints that helped them to the victory on Senior Night. Trailing by two at the half, the Saints emerged from the locker room to start the third quarter on a 10-0 run that guided Emmanuel to a 37-29 lead.
- Emmanuel led by as many as a dozen in the third quarter, thanks to 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor while holding the Bears to just 5-of-22 shooting in that span. The Bears gained momentum at the end of the third, cutting the deficit to 50-42 as the team's headed for the fourth.
- A key 7-0 run by Coast Guard in the middle of the fourth quarter got the Bears within one possession at 56-53, but a three-point answer by Fiin and back-to-back layups for sophomore Allison Wild (Tewksbury, Mass.), helped fend off the Bears run.
- On Coast Guard's bucket to get back to within one possession at 56-53 with 5:42 remaining, Emmanuel's response came by finishing the game on a 16-5 run to clinch the non-conference win.
