THE LEAD – A big third quarter powered the Emmanuel College women's basketball team past Anna Maria College, 83-50, Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action in Boston, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints raced out to a 16-2 lead behind 10 points from first year guard Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) before Anna Maria battled back to make it a 20-16 game at the end of the first quarter.
- EC opened the second with a 6-0 flurry to get the lead back to double-digits at 26-16 but the feisty AMCats scrapped to keep the game in reach, pulling to within five late in the stanza on a jumper by Franchesca Hammond (Worcester, Mass.) cutting the deficit to 32-27 before EC sophomore guard Amari Faust (Burke, Va.) closed the half with a layup at the buzzer to account for the 34-27 halftime score.
- Hammond led all scorers at the break with 11 points while Chan paced the Saints with 10 points, all scored in the first four minutes of the game.
- Emmanuel put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the AMCats by a 33-6 margin in the period, almost matching their first half point total as Chan and senior forward Loredana D'Agostino (Broad Brook, Conn.) each netted seven points in the frame.
- The AMCats battled until the end, outscoring EC by a 17-16 margin in the final frame but the hosts cruised to their 12th straight win, downing Anna Maria by an 83-50 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Chan finished with 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting night from the field while D'Agostino posted a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
- First year forward Marinique Reddin (Tampa, Fla.) led the way for the AMCats with a game-high 22 points and team-best 12 rebounds for a double-double.
- Emmanuel out-rebounded AMC by a 55-35 margin in the win to improve to 11-0 all-time against their GNAC foe.
