THE LEAD – An 11-2 second quarter run helped give host Emmanuel College control en route to a 72-60 Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory over Albertus Magnus College in women's basketball action at the Jean Yawkey Center on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 23-19 with 7:30 to play in the opening half, the Saints put together an 11-2 run capped by back-to-back hoops by junior guard Caitlin Barker (Plainville, Mass.) to give EC a 32-25 advantage with 1:23 left in the quarter.
- Emmanuel opened the third quarter on fire with a 10-2 flurry fueled by six points from first year guard Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) to extend the EC lead to 42-30.
- The Saints led by as many as 16 in the third before the Falcons closed the gap with an 8-2 run to close the stanza, cutting the Emmanuel lead to 10 at 55-45 with a late layup by Sharaya Keele (Adams, Mass.).
- The Falcons held EC scoreless for the opening four minutes of the final quarter, pulling to within one possession at 55-52 following a pair of free throws by senior guard Katherine Raposo (Warwick, R.I.) but the Saints were able to get the lead back up to double-digits on two freebies from grad student Jamad Fiin (Boston, Mass.) with 2:51 left to make it 66-56.
- Albertus Magnus was able to close the margin to eight points (68-60) with 1:29 to play before the Saints netted the final four points of the action to account for the 72-60 final in Boston.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Four of five Emmanuel starters finished in double-figures led by a 14 point, 12 rebound double-double from senior forward Loredana D'Agostino (Broad Brook, Conn.). Fellow senior Riley Lahiff (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 12 points, six assists and five boards while Chan and Fiin ended the action with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
- First year Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) led all scorers with a game-high 18 points for the Falcons while first-year guard Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) added 15 points.
- The Saints controlled the glass in the win, outrebounding the Falcons by a 46-33 margin.
- Emmanuel improves to 33-4 all-time against the Falcons and has now won 29 straight against AMC dating back to the 1999 season.
