THE LEAD – The Emmanuel College women's basketball team opened its 2021-22 Great Northeast Athletic Conference slate with a convincing 83-47 victory over Colby-Sawyer College Saturday afternoon at the Jean Yawkey Center in Boston, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trading buckets to open the action, the Saints rattled off 10 straight points capped by back-to-back layups from first year forward Allison Wild (Tewksbury, Mass.) to put Emmanuel on top 12-2 with 6:03 to play in the opening quarter. EC closed the quarter just as strong, putting together a 9-0 flurry to take a 27-6 lead into the second period.
- A three-point play by senior forward Loredana D'Agostino (Broad Brook, Conn.) gave Emmanuel its largest lead of the half at 36-11 with 5:13 remaining before the Chargers made up some ground before halftime, cutting the deficit to 40-21 at the break on a three by first year guard Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) to cap the scoring.
- Emmanuel put the game out of reach in the third, outscoring the Chargers by a 26-14 margin capped with a jumper at the buzzer by first year guard AJ Godios (Hamburg, N.Y.) to give the hosts a 66-35 advantage.
- The Saints cruised in the final stanza, shooting 56.7% from the field in the second half to post the 83-47 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- D'Agostino finished with a team-high 11 points in just 13 minutes of action while Wild ended the afternoon with 10 points. Also in double-figures with 10 points was sophomore forward Kiera Eubanks (Portland, Maine) with 10 points.
- Colby-Sawyer junior guard Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) led all scorers with 13 points while junior forward Ameesah Cotton (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the double-double.
- All 15 players on the Saints roster scored at least one basket in the win and the 83 points was the highest team total this season.
