THE LEAD – After a low-scoring first half, Amherst College posted 39 points in the final two quarters on 11-of-30 shooting, as the Mammoths escaped a hostile Jean Yawkey Center with a 56-48 win over the Emmanuel Saints on Tuesday night, as the Mammoths remained unbeaten while handing the Saints their first loss of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leading 17-16 at halftime, it was the Mammoths third quarter scoring surge and defensive pressure that helped Amherst remain unbeaten and finish the month a perfect 6-0.
- After trading buckets in the early third quarter, the Mammoths reached their largest lead of the game thanks to a 14-5 run over the span of 7:00 to take a 10-point lead. Amherst sophomore Reeya Patel (Saline, Mich.) scored seven points in the run, including 5-of-6 from the foul line.
- The Mammoths took that 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Saints would not go quietly as they started the final quarter on a 15-7 run in the opening 4:55 to trail 42-40 with just over five minutes remaining.
- Amherst would respond down the stretch and squash the Saints momentum as the Mammoths double-digit lead was re-established with a 9-1 surge that put Amherst ahead 51-41 with 1:30 remaining.
- The Saints could only pull within seven in the final 90 seconds as the Mammoths head home at 6-0 following the 56-48 victory on Yosinoff Court.
