THE LEAD – The Emmanuel Saints are 3-0 for the first time since 2018, after pulling off a thrilling overtime win on Thursday night against the MIT Engineers, 75-68 on Andy Yosinoff Court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Heading to overtime knotted at 58-58, first-year Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) opened the scoring with an and-one, as the Saints never surrendered the lead from that point.
- Traded buckets got the score to 63-62 in favor of Emmanuel with 3:01 remaining, but the game's most pivotal scoring run, 10-0, went the way of the Saints, including six points by graduate Jamad Fiin (Boston, Mass.), as the Saints expanded their lead to 73-62.
- The Engineers cut the deficit to six and had possession in the final minute of OT with a chance to reduce Emmanuel's advantage to one possession, but a three-point miss and foul of Chan sent the Saints to the line to restore a three-possession lead.
- Chan came through in the clutch at the end of regulation as she had to knock down two free throws to tie the game with 5.1 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. MIT's 6-0 run at the end of regulation nearly decided the game before Chan's two makes from the foul line.
- After being outscored by 15 points in the second quarter, the Saints third quarter performance was one of their best of the early season, as they came all the way back from a 12-point halftime deficit to lead 42-41 at the end of the quarter. The Saints outscored the Engineers 20-7 in the third quarter while holding the MIT to 3-of-14 from the floor.
- The Engineers started the second quarter trailing by three, but MIT put their stamp on the first half, outscoring Emmanuel 17-2 while holding the Saints to 1-of-12 shooting as the Engineers took a 34-22 lead at halftime.
