WINNING STREAK EXTENDED TO THREE FOR THE SAINTS, 75-60

Four Saints starters posted double-figures as the Women's Basketball team posted a 75-60 win on Thursday evening against the Newbury College Nighthawks to record their third victory in a row on the Andy Yosinoff Court, completing an all-time 5-0 record for EC against the Hawks.

THE LEAD: Four Saints starters posted double-figures as the Women's Basketball team posted a 75-60 win on Thursday evening against the Newbury College Nighthawks to record their third victory in a row on the Andy Yosinoff Court, completing an all-time 5-0 record for EC against the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The first quarter started off slow for both teams until the reserves of Emmanuel sparked the offense, with freshman Riley Lahiff (Attleboro, Mass.) and Loredana D'Agostino (East Windsor, Conn.) connected on back to back layups to take a 12-5 lead, pacing the way for the Saints to control the remainder of the first, 17-9.
  • Newbury started the second with freshman Jada Gee (Springfield, Mass.) attacking the rim to close the gap to five before juniors Kayla Weaver (West Haven, Conn.) and Yuleska Ramirez-Tejeda (Cambridge, Mass.) turned the tide for the Saints with strong defensive pressure on the press and drives to the basket, closing out the half ahead of the Nighthawks, 34-21.
  • EC came out of the break scoring five unanswered points before Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) broke the streak for the Nighthawks, but the Saints led by senior captain Maddie McLaughlin (Westerly, R.I) and Weaver started to connect on jump shots outside of the paint to extend the lead heading into the last frame, 57-36.
  • Despite a late-game run by Newbury led by Gee, the Saint's starters were able to complete the victory in the final quarter with junior forward Caitlin Cipriano taking control of the paint, scoring eight of her total fourteen points to close out the game ahead of the Nighthawks, 75-60.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Sanders led the evening for both teams with a double-double, recording 26 points and 13 rebounds, tying her season best in both categories.
  • Weaver was able to control the offense for the Saints with 18 points and three assists, but also showed her defensive skills by contributing seven steals to Emmanuel's 16 total.
  • Cipriano, McLaughlin and Ramirez-Tejeda were all able to add 14 points each to ECs total, with Ramirez-Tejeda also recording a double-double with 15 rebounds.

UP NEXT

  • The Nighthawks will look to bounce back after the weekend on the road against NECC rival Becker College on Tuesday, January 22nd at 6PM.
  • The Saints will use the momentum of the evening's win on their way to 10 GNAC conference games in a row, first of which at Rivier University on Saturday, January 19th at 1PM.
