NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Emmanuel College Women’s Basketball Head Coach Andrew Yosinoff joined elite company on Saturday afternoon with his 800th career coaching victory as Emmanuel topped host Albertus Magnus College, 100-94, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action in New Haven, Conn. Yosinoff becomes just the 14th NCAA Women’s Basketball coach to win 800 games and just the second at the NCAA Division III level to hit the milestone.

THE LEAD: Emmanuel College Women's Basketball Head Coach Andrew Yosinoff joined elite company on Saturday afternoon with his 800th career coaching victory as Emmanuel topped host Albertus Magnus College, 100-94, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action in New Haven, Conn. Yosinoff becomes just the 14th NCAA Women's Basketball coach to win 800 games and just the second at the NCAA Division III level to hit the milestone.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Saints led for only eight seconds in the opening half of play, taking a brief 7-6 lead after a made free throw from sophomore guard Kayla Weaver (West Haven, Conn.) before the Falcons rattled off eight straight points to shift momentum and give the hosts a 14-7 lead after a made layup from Olivia Bolden.
  • Albertus Magnus stayed in control in the second quarter, extending its largest lead right before the half on a jumper from Raegon Shirling-Davis to pull the Falcons ahead 49-37 heading into the break.
  • Emmanuel reset and opened the second half of play on an 8-0 spurt to cut the AMC lead to 49-45.
  • With 5:39 to play in the third, Jill Johnson put the hosts back on top by double figures with a layup to make it a 50-39 score and later made it a 70-58 game with a free throw with 3:01 to play in the frame.
  • Over the final three minutes of the quarter, Emmanuel outscored the Falcons 11-2 to pull within one possession at 72-69 heading into the fourth quarter behind a 10 point effort by Weaver in the stanza.
  • In the fourth quarter, the squads traded baskets through the first three minutes of play before back-to-back hoops by sophomore guard Yuleska Ramirez-Tejeda (South Boston, Mass.) tied the score at 79-79.
  • The Falcons responded with a 5-0 spurt to regain an 84-79 lead but the Saints continued to press, forcing the hosts into several turnovers down the stretch resulting in transition baskets.
  • EC freshman Taylor Shubrick (East Longmeadow, Mass.) put Emmanuel on top 88-87 with a fast break basket with 3:52 to play before Kiki Epps tied the score at 90-90 minutes later.
  • An old-fashion three point play by Shubrick followed by a Ramirez-Tejeda layup gave the Saints a five point cushion at 95-90 with 2:11 remaining which proved to be too much for the Falcons to overcome at Emmanuel held on for the 100-94 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Ramirez-Tejeda led Emmanuel with another double-double outing, recording a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four steals and four assists.
  • Bolden also posted a monster double-double for the Falcons, registering game-highs in points (33) and rebounds (19).
  • Weaver added 18 points and a game-high six assists for the Saints while senior reserve Alissa Fox (National Park, N.J.) came off the bench for a 20-point lift.
  • Johnson ended the day with 24 points on 7-for-13 shooting before fouling of the contest after 27 minutes of action.
  • Both teams shot well from the field as Emmanuel shot 51.9% compared to the Falcons 48.1% but both teams struggled from behind the arc and the free throw line as Emmanuel managed only 38.2% from the charity stripe and a dismal 16.7% from behind the arc. Albertus shot 58.6% from the line and just 5.6% from downtown (1-for-18).

YOSINOFF IN THE RECORDBOOKS

  • Yosinoff joins the ranks of Pat Summitt, Tara VanDerveer, Geno Auriemma, Sylvia Hatchell, Barbra Stevens, Vivian Stringer, Jody Conradt, Jim Foster, Robin Selvig, Andy Landers, Muffett McGraw, Curt Fredrickson and Michael Strong as the only NCAA Women's Basketball Coaches to surpass 800 wins.
  • Yosinoff currently ranks second all-time among NCAA Division III Women's Basketball coaches with 800 wins and is now just 15 wins shy of tying Michael Strong's D-III record of 815 career wins.
  • All 800 coaching wins have come at Emmanuel College making Yosinoff one of only nine coaches to win 800 or more games at the same institution.
